Least squares quiz: 3 questions
Three questions on the Least squares card, the way WikiCards duels ask them. Pick an answer, the facts are just below.
Find the missing word
The ______ least-squares problem occurs in statistical regression analysis, it has a closed-form solution.
Answer
linear. The linear least-squares problem occurs in statistical regression analysis, it has a closed-form solution. From the Least squares article on Wikipedia.
Which of these cards hits hardest (highest ATK)?
Answer
Binomial coefficient. Binomial coefficient 80 · Corrosion 77 · Least squares 73 · Hyperbolic functions 70 ATK in WikiCards.
Which of these Wikipedia articles is read the most in a year?
Answer
Corrosion. Corrosion 570,000 · Hyperbolic functions 390,000 · Binomial coefficient 230,000 · Least squares 180,000 Wikipedia reads over a year.
In a duel, each round asks a question like these about the opposing card, with 15 seconds to answer.
The facts on the card
The card carries these facts from its Wikipedia article.
- Least squares problems fall into two categories: linear or ordinary least squares and nonlinear least squares, depending on whether or not the model functions are linear in all unknowns.
- The linear least-squares problem occurs in statistical regression analysis, it has a closed-form solution.
- The nonlinear problem is usually solved by iterative refinement, at each iteration the system is approximated by a linear one, and thus the core calculation is similar in both cases.
Why it is Uncommon
Rarity in WikiCards follows a year of Wikipedia page views: the most read articles become Epic and Legendary cards. The Least squares article was read about 180,000 times in a year. ATK comes from the length of the article and DEF from its quality, so this card hits with 73 and blocks with 65: each hit it takes is cut by 26 %.
How to get Least squares
Open packs. Each pack holds five cards drawn from real Wikipedia articles, the rarest last, and the fifth card is always Rare or better. The odds are shown in the game. A free pack arrives every hour and two can wait, and the Coins you win in duels buy more packs.
